Culture and Context

The aesthetic of African cooking pots became my inspirational source. A close analysis of these forms created a desire to celebrate their inherent curves and surface qualities. I chose to explore this through the deconstruction of thrown pots. Cutting accentuates the curves and draws the eye into a further exploration of the forms. Partial guilding enriches the visual contrast between cut edge, form and surface. These vessels seek to retain a reference to the original cooking pots, capture the essence of rich African cultural heritage and achieve a contemporary sculptural presence.
